NATIONAL PATHOGEN REPOSITORY AT NVRI

GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

This historic Groundbreaking Ceremony holds on Tuesday May 14th, 2024, at the proposed site for the construction of the National Pathogen Repository at the NVRI HQ Central Diagnostic Laboratory location in Vom. This ceremony is presided over by the Honorable Minister of Agriculture, Sen. Abubakar Kyari and supported by the United States Chargé d'Affaires ad interim and the Dept Head BTRP US DTRA.

National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) is the foremost veterinary institute in Nigeria with the mandate to conduct research into all aspects of animal diseases, develop and produce animal vaccines; provide surveillance and diagnosis of animal diseases, and advisory services to farmers. In executing its mandate, NVRI aspires to be the apex veterinary Institute in Africa driven by excellence in research, diagnosis, vaccine development and production. The Institute has a rich history, interlinked with the history of veterinary services in Nigeria.

NVRI was established in 1924 following the rinderpest outbreaks of the late 1800s and early 1900s that significantly decimated Africa's cattle population. As a solution provider, NVRI pioneered the development and production of a local anti-rinderpest serum, an effort that contributed to the control and eventual global eradication of rinderpest. For 100 years, the Institute has provided leadership along its key operations of disease surveillance, diagnostic services, innovative research and vaccine manufacturing.

NVRI also provides advisory services engaging rural communities and developing technical capacity.

Being the national laboratory, NVRI serves as the repository for all pathogens of animal origin. It is the designated FAO Regional Laboratory for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), the National Reference Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), and FAO-ECTAD collaborating Centre for emergency preparedness for transboundary animal diseases. We are on the national One Health laboratory network, maintaining and improving efficient and effective biosafety and biosecurity practices.

The US Defence Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)'s Biological Threat Reduction Program (BTRP) began engagement in Nigeria in 2018 and conducted a three-phased assessment with Nigerian government entities. For NVRI, the aim is to enhance capacities for detection, diagnoses, and reporting of exceptionally dangerous pathogens (EDPs) within the territory of Nigeria. It also aims to increase NVRI's capacities to safely and securely handle, and store mutually agreed upon EDPs.

NVRI provides confirmatory diagnoses of transboundary animal diseases and EDPs. Advanced capacities exist, at the institute including a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory. In addition to the Central Diagnostic Laboratory in Vom, samples are received from its 23 Outstation laboratories strategically located around the country. #Drmaryammuhammad
